The current trend is to job hop, so don’t feel alone if you are having a hard time figuring out what you want to do. According to a recent Gallup poll millennials are least engaged at work with at least 60 percent being open to a new job opportunity. With the average tenure of a millennial employee being 2 years.
Loving what you do has major benefits. One of them being more opportunities. You will spend your time focused on what you’re doing and give it your best. Research has again when we hate our jobs we are not engaged and our productivity levels suffer.
Now while I would love to see everyone in a real job they loved we live in a world where that is not being realistic. It may take time before you land a job you love but that doesn’t mean you can’t choose to be engaged in who are and what you are doing right n now. After all, what if you are right where you are meant to be? Now, if you would’ve walked up to me and told me this while I was working at a dreadful call center I would assume you were nuts. Not all work is meant to be enjoyed but we do have the power to create our work environment.
Engagement has become a hot topic lately. Why? Because when employees are least engaged the company’s bottom line suffers. There are millions in revenue lost due to the lack of employees being fully engaged in their work. When you are less engaged you are not productive. Lower levels of productivity impact a company in its entirety.
While I’m not here to advocate for working more hours, I do feel like being ‘engaged’ adds a sense of value. Founder and CEO of Porch, Matt Ehrlichman states, “It’s up to employers to get the right people in the right roles and give them work that’s truly engaging.” I agree but it also up to us to choose to be engaged in our work.
So what does being ‘engaged’ at work mean?
Employee engagement is the emotional commitment the employee has to the organization and its goals. Choosing not to be engaged is keeping you from being able to focus on your strengths. When I hated my job the days are long and there no other job opportunities. Once I let go these three things I gained the clarity I needed to change my career. Focusing on the action helped me to remove the blind limits I had placed on my career longevity. I felt like I didn’t have the time to really figure out.
My job wasn’t the dream but it was securing my finances. However, my hatred for the tasks lowered my productivity and my performance suffered. If you’re not engaged in what you are doing, how are being a contribution to your team? Work sucks, especially if you don’t like what you are doing. But I had to realize if I wanted a new job, I had to start with me. A simple change in my attitude realigned my purpose and helped me keep moving forward, despite the fact that I felt like my current role was a setback.

I was happier at work, focused on my strengths, and at best productivity.
Find your focus and you will find your success. Think of your career as a series of connected experiences. You are right where you are meant to, even if doesn’t look like it. The change you want to see starts with you.
The big picture is living the life you’ve always imagined. Make a choice today to change your perspective. Do not put this off tomorrow. Do not wait until after they give you a raise, or you find another place. Be happy and thankful today. This employer chose you and provided you an opportunity.
Make sure you have a clear understanding of what it is that you are looking for in your next place. Be bold and concise. Be bold enough to look for jobs that match your interests. Be concise on exactly what you need your next job to have whether it’s less teamwork or more break time or better benefits.
Either way, the only way to really “figure” it out is to get active in your life now. Stop waiting for the next thing or something else to come along. Get engaged now. Living in the present opens new doors. Hating your job will only yield more negativity and will ultimately land you exactly where you are.
